From Another Angle

My name is Rachel and welcome to From Another Angle, my travel blog. Here you will find photographs and written accounts of my past travels. Please note that unless stated, everything you see written and pictured in this blog belongs to me.

I am a 9-5 worker, freelance web/graphic designer and wannabe photographer with a serious case of itchy feet and wanderlust. I occasionally like to go out and see the world and its beauty. Sometimes I like to go off in a tangent and explore every single nook and cranny on this planet - often times parts of the world not many people get to see ... the world from another angle.

As some of you might or might not know, I’m no longer updating FAA. I’ve moved onto threebyfives.org (three-by-fives.tumblr.com), where I blog about photography and design (and where the majority of!my travel photos have now ended up. However, I do recommend that you follow Lauren (lavenderdays.tumblr.com). Lauren is insanely talented and runs a damn good blog. Go! Go! Go!

In January 2012 I had the pleasure of visiting one of the biggest (and arguably, the best) cities in the world - New York City! Just like everyone else who visits the place (except for my high school best friend’s boyfriend, but he’s a weirdo :P) I fell in love and vowed to return.
In terms of photography, I like to do something unique all the time - usually in the form of photo series. When I was in London for the majority of 2009, I did London in Black and White. I wanted to do something like this for New York.
In the early days of my visit, I was shopping and found a Diana Lomography camera. Back home in Sydney, I had been searching high and low for a Diana, with every intention of taking it to New York with me. Alas, I failed. It was like that camera was specifically placed there for me to find.
Needless to say, I bought the camera (well … two. A Diana Mini and a Diana F+), bought some 35mm film at Walgreen’s and started shooting. And that’s how New York on Film was born.
The neighbourhoods you will see in this series are SoHo, NoHo, Greenwich Village and Astoria in Queens. And of course, there is also a shot of Lady Liberty herself. I will be posting them to this blog for everyone to see. So please enjoy them and let me know what you think.
That person in the picture, by the way, is Yours Truly. That was taken inside a clothing boutique in SoHo, in Manhattan.

An announcement about From Another Angle

It is with deep regret when I say that once I finish posting all my pictures of my recent North American trip and tell all the stories that I want to tell, I will no longer be updating this blog.

From Another Angle will still exist on the internet. It’s a memento of the first five years of my twenties, after all. But things are changing. I’m moving on. My feet, for now, is staying firmly on the ground (in Australia), because I want to concentrate on my career and getting as far as I can.

But don’t worry, I’m still a vagabond at heart. I love travelling and I love immersing myself in different cultures. I don’t know what my travel plans are as of yet. Time will only tell.

This does not necessarily mean that I will be disappearing from the internet. I have another blog, threebyfives.org. That blog is focused more on my journey and adventures as a Creative, as well as randoms thing that I find funny. While I am a travel lover with itchy feet, I’m a designer and photographer first and foremost. I want to concentrate more on these pursuits.

If given the opportunity, I will travel again. But this time, these photos will be posted on threebyfives.org instead.

Thank you so much for all of your support. I have met so many wonderful people in the travel community, some of which I now consider one of my closest and dearest friends. Thank you so much for the kind words you have all said about my photographs and my work. I’ll never forget each and every comment that has been made.

If you want to visit more quality travel blogs, there is my affiliates list. Please check them out. And please feel free to come on over to threebyfives.org. Feel free to say hello. I’m friendly. I don’t bite.

Lots of love
Rachel

So apparently I did the MapCrunch thing wrong. Oh well.

I was never really good at following instructions anyway …

With regard to this Tumblr game. I REALLY lucked out with this one. I recognised the schlerophyll forests and the dusty road, so I immediately said to myself, “I’m in Australia somewhere - in the Outback.”

Then I hovered my mouse over the highway and was told that it was the Eyre Highway. I immediately thought, “Okay, I’m somewhere on the Nullabour Plains. Now it just depends if I’m on Western Australian end, or the South Australian end. I took a stab in the dark and chose Western Australia, therefore my nearest airport would be the designated emergency air strips for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, because I know the Eyre Highway has one of those. They would then take me to Perth Airport, which would then fly me across the country to Sydney.

Fair enough, MapCrunch says that I am in Eyre, Western Australia, Australia.

HEY TUMBLR, LET’S PLAY A GAME
To play this game, go to MapCrunch, select “hide location”, make sure you have all countries unselected, and click go. What this will do is drop you in a random part of the world. It’s as if you woke up on the side of a road in an unfamiliar country. The goal of the game is to find your way to an airport so you can return home.
Bonus Hard Mode: No using outside sources, and that includes using google maps to figure out your location from signs or landmarks ;3

Concrete Jungle Where Dreams Are Made OfLocation: Empire State Building, New York City, New York, USA

I visited the top of the Empire State Building in the middle of winter, at midnight. It was perfect. The only people that were there were myself and my friend Steph. Yeah, it was cold, but it was totally worth it.

I felt on top of the world while I was here, yet at the same time I felt humbled by how little we all are in the grand scheme of things. It puts a lot of things into perspective.

East Liberty Street & Michigan TheatreLocation: Ann Arbor, Michigan, United States
Coordinates: 42° 16′ 46″ N, 83° 44′ 31″ W

Come to Ann Arbor for the awesome food at Zingerman’s Delicatessen, the awesome shops and that whole laid back college vibe (because it is a College town after all, for the University of Michigan). Don’t leave Ann Arbor without seeing a movie at Michigan Theatre. It’s definitely something that you must experience for yourself.

I keep seeing posts about people wondering what they can do in NYC when they go and see Darren.

nysundust:

So I’ve decided to compile a list.

Free/Cheap:

  • take part in the DCST Scavenger Hunt. You will see a ton of stuff if you take part in one of them :)
  • Museum of Modern Art (free on fridays between 4 and 8 pm)
  • Whitney Museum of Art (pay-as-you-wish on fridays between 6 and 9 pm)
  • Metropolitan Museum of Art (recommended price is 25$ for adults and 12$ for studends [with I.D.] however, you can usually pay what you want. I tend to give them 10 bucks, but no one will be mad if you pay less or nothing)
  • Museum of the American Indian. Fascinating, breathtaking and free.
  • Staten Island Ferry. It’s FREE and it takes you to Staten Island and back to Manhattan past the Statue of Liberty (although albeit not as close as the Ellis Island ferry)
  • Walk the bridges/take the subway into the suburbs and enjoy the view of the Skyline.
  • Southstreet Seaport District has an amazing flair, great shops and awesome food (try the bacon-cheese-burger. It’s delicious) plus you get to look at pretty ships
  • Walk. A LOT. Bring comfy shoes and just take an entire day to enjoy the city. Learn the atmosphere, feel the flair. New York, if you’re happy dealing with the masses of people, is an incredible city. It has an amazing story. Take time to learn it. Personally, I usually start at Ground Zero and make my way Uptown on Broadway to Times Square
  • Check out the awesome architecture. You don’t have to go to the top of the Rock or the Empire State Building to see and admire the architecture of SoHo, Little Italy, The Flat Iron Building or the Chrysler Building.
  • Grand Central. The hustling and bustling and the stores and the food are all amazing.
  • High Line. A Park created on top of an old freight rail line on the West Side of Manhattan. Amazing for photography I’ve been told.
  • Check out the churches. While they aren’t as spectacular as they are in Europe, the contrast between their architecture and the modern skyscrapers surrounding them is fascinating.
  • Central fucking Park. So many amazing things to see there. From the Onassis Reservoir to the Alice Statue (which holds a special place in my heart) and of course Strawberry Fields. There is so much beauty to discover here. And if you want to splash a bit of money, you can go ice skating.
  • In general actually check out the parks. They’re beautiful in every season.
  • Rockefeller Center. You don’t need to take the tour of the NBC studios to see how truly awesome it is. Personally, I love the hundred of international flags that flutter in the wind (careful, politics nerd alarm)
  • Go see Times Square. If possible at night. Only then does the magnitude of it truly hit you.

Basically, just discover the city at your own pace. If you walk with your eyes open, you will find something to do that you enjoy, i promise. Even on a small budget.

If you want to splash a bit more money:

  • Rockefeller Center: NBC studios tour (I have never taken it, but heard it’s great) and Top of The Rock. It’s expensive, but I hear more than worth it (25$). I am definitely doing it this time around. For photographers: there is a sunrise/sunset ticket for 40$ that allows you access twice in one day.
  • Empire State Building. It’s a must. Yes, it costs, but it’s simply amazing. Try going in the evening during the week. In winter the lines shouldn’t be too bad, even before sunset. Try to go up at dusk, so you get to see the city by the light of day and wait up there for the sun to set. It’s an incredible view. Wear something warm though, it’ll be windy as fuck.
  • The Frick Collection. They have some of the most amazing paintings from Europe including Tizian, Turner, Rembrandt and Vermeer (sign me up for that!). All that in an old Town House, which has lost nothing of its charm. Unfortunately the exhibition with some of Picasso’s works closes on the 7th (a bucket for my creys)
  • Liberty Island and Ellis Island. Both are fascinating although I wish you were still able to walk up the statue and get an overview from there. Arrive early, because chances are there will be long queues for the ferry. Before you go on the boat, check out Battery Park and the numerous statues and memorials dedicated to veterans and 9/11. Liberty Island is fun, but honestly, you have a better view of the Statue from the ferry, so I never bother staying there long. Ellis Island on the other hand is fascinating and bursting with history. It deals with the immigrants and the exhibitions are breathtaking.
  • Check out the Wall Street Bull. Although chances of getting a picture with it are pretty slim, since there are SO many tourists around all the time.
  • The International Center of Photography. It’s a must for people like me who love pretty pictures. Conveniently located not far from Bryant Part, Grand Central and Times Square.

My favorite things to do and places to see (obviously down to personal preference)

  • Lower Manhattan: South Street Seaport (i just love the flair) and up to lower Broadway (with some AMAZING shops with cheap designer ware), through SoHo with its amazing architecture and further to Union Square. they have a Wholefoods there with a great view of the square and the Empire State Building. Then a 5 minute walk to the Flat Iron Building
  • Central Park. I could spend hours there. In the summer, just lying in the sun. In the winter having snowball fights, ice skating or just enjoying a walk, seeing the Alice Statue, which is my favorite thing ever.
  • 5th Avenue. Even if you have no money whatsoever, I love window shopping, checking out the different designs, going into some stores feeling fancy. Have some Starbucks in the opulent and completely over the top Trump Tower, check out the Apple Store and FAO Schwarz (if only for the sweets) and stop by Abercrombie & Fitch to look at the pretty shirtless guys (yes, I am that shallow). Plus, the town houses are pretty I guess.
  • All the TV stores. NBC, HBO, CBS all have stores in New York City and I always come back with MASSIVE amounts of merch from my favorite tv shows.
  • Taking a cab ride. It’s not all that expensive and it’s a necessary New York experience.
  • Time Square at night.
  • The city at night viewed from the top of the Empire State Building.
  • East Village, Greenwich Village. Architecture porn.

This was pretty fucking long, but I hope it gave some people who are coming to NYC for the first time some idea of what they could do.

I’m a tourist myself, but I adore the city and I always try to make the most of it.

This is probably the best ‘To-Do List’ for NYC I’ve seen. And I’ve seen a lot.
